A Gourmet Walk Through Paris’ Hidden Covered Passages
Step off the main tourist routes and explore the covered passages of Paris, true hidden gems tucked between Haussmann-era streets. These elegant 19th-century galleries offer a peaceful and refined atmosphere where Parisian history, culture, and gastronomy come together.
During this walking tour, you will visit some of the most beautiful and iconic passages, including Galerie Vivienne, Passage des Panoramas, Passage Jouffroy, and Passage Verdeau. Glass ceilings, mosaic floors, ironwork, and historic shopfronts create a timeless setting that feels worlds away from modern Paris.
Led by a knowledgeable English-speaking guide, specialized in Food culture, the tour blends cultural discovery with gourmet tastings at carefully selected artisan food shops. Expect chocolate, sweet treats, and other French specialties that showcase authentic local craftsmanship.
Why Were the Covered Passages Created?
The covered passages were created in Paris between the late 18th and early 19th centuries to provide protected pedestrian walkways, sheltered from rain, mud, and busy streets. Illuminated by glass roofs, they allowed Parisians to stroll, shop, and socialize comfortably year-round.
At the time, they represented urban innovation and modern living and are often considered the ancestors of today’s shopping malls. More than commercial spaces, they were places to see and be seen, symbols of Parisian elegance, leisure, and refined daily life.
